DAVAO CITY---The veteran-laden Metro Manila chess team won its team battle against some of the top chess players in Mindanao in a goodwill charity chess match on December 28 from 8 pm to 10 pm.
Manila beat Mindanao 91-88 in the 5th Metrolirot Cup organized to collect money that will be donated to the victims of the deadly typhoon Odette in Mindanao.
Davaoeno National Master Jonathan Tan scored 16 points to lead Mindanao in a losing cause.
Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates owner Rey C. Urbiztondo also played well in the charity chess match with 13 points.
The other members of the Mindanao chess team are Jong Guevarra Jr., Engr. Allan Diez, and Philippine paralympic chess coach NM James Infiesto.
The charity chess for a cause match was organized by lawyer Jong and friends and the Oracle Chess team. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
