67 ex-NPA rebels in North Cotabato finish 15-day ‘deradicalization’ program
DAVAO CITY- Sixty-seven former members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) who voluntarily surrendered to the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division finished a 15-day “deradicalization" program to prepare them to return to a peaceful life.

Second Lieutenant Ailene Marieh Loria, head of the civil military operations of 72nd Infantry Battalion (IB) said the training focused not only on lectures and discussions about the wrong ideologies perpetrated by the communist group but also in enhancing their spiritual aspect by conducting Bible Studies and Spiritual Enlightenment.

Loria said the program aims to remold their way of thinking and remove the hatred, negative perspective about the government and its leaders and undo their criminal and revolutionary mindset.

The rebel returnees who surrendered in North Cotabato were also informed about the various plans and programs offered to them by the government including social, economic, health and political.

During the program held at Barangay Mua-an, Kidapawan City, North Cotabato on Monday (November 29), the former NPA members also received food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Loria said each of the 33 participants received P15,000 financial assistance as part of the implementation of Executive Order (EO) 70 in addressing the issues, concerns and needs of the participants.

Lieutenant Colonel Jose C. Regonay, commander of 72nd IB assured that the unit will continue to protect the peace and order in North Cotabato and facilitate the delivery of services especially to the former rebels.

Provincial Governor Nancy A .Catamco, meanwhile pledged her commitment to support the fight against insurgency, assuring that she will continue to address the needs of NPA insurgents towards achieving the government’s ultimate goal of just and lasting peace.
