The president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino revealed that the International Olympic Committee would select Olympic qualifiers based on their performance at the Asian Games, to be held in Hangzhou, China, in September of next year.
The IOC emphasized in a note addressed to International Boxing Association president Umar Kremlev of Russia and distributed to various national Olympic committees that the five continental tournaments will act as one of three qualifiers for the Summer Games.
Aside from the Asian Games, the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, the European Games in Krakow, Poland, the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, and the All-Africa Games in Accra, Ghana, will all serve as Olympic qualifiers.
Tolentino said they are still asking the IOC how many boxers would qualify for the Paris Olympics through the Asian Games and the two other qualifiers for the Summer Games.
Filipino boxers have high hopes for the Olympics in Paris.
In fact, after Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam won silver medals and Eumir Marcial took bronze in the Tokyo Olympics last year, Filipino boxers are now recognized as the finest in the world.
Overall, boxing has contributed four silvers and four bronzes to the Philippines' 1-5-8 gold-silver-bronze haul in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The IOC will oversee the qualifying and contests for Paris 2024 while emphasizing in the same memo that boxing will be excluded from the Los Angeles 2028 Games program until the IBA's leadership and credibility situation is resolved.(Romeo Braceros Jr,)
