DAVAO CITY---Fast-rising Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is off to a good start in the W25 Palma del Rio in Spain on Tuesday.
Eala, who currently is the top-ranked woman tennis player in Southeast Asia, beat qualifier Jimar Geraldine Gerald Gonzales of Chile in the Round of 32, 6-2, 6-0.
With the win, the 17-year-old tennis player will face the winner between Valeria Savinykh and second seed Jessika Ponchet in the next round.
Based on the latest Women Tennis Association (WTA) ranking, Eala is currently ranked 340 in the world.
It was learned that Eala jumped 73 spots higher from her previous ranking of 413.
Eala's world ranking jumped after finishing runner-up in the W60 Madrid competition.
Eala focuses on adding an ITF title to the pro circuit after winning the W25 Chiang Rai tournament last April. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
