JTF Sinaya chief supports ongoing earthquake response efforts in Balut Island
BALUT ISLAND, Sarangani, Davao Occidental – The Commander of Joint Task Force (JTF) Sinaya, Commodore Ireneo D. Battung visited Balut Island, Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, on June 12, 2026, primarily to engage with and boost the morale of deployed personnel supporting ongoing operations in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that recently affected the island and nearby areas.

The visit also provided an opportunity to assess the situation on the ground and monitor the progress of ongoing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) efforts.

During his visit, Commodore Battung met with personnel of Task Group Balut and other Philippine Navy units deployed in the area who have been at the forefront of relief and response operations. Through a Talk to Troops, he commended the personnel for their sacrifice, dedication, resilience, and professionalism in carrying out humanitarian missions under challenging conditions. He likewise emphasized the importance of their role in helping affected communities recover from the disaster and assured them of the command’s continued support.

The JTF Sinaya Commander also received operational updates on ongoing response activities being conducted in coordination with local government units and partner agencies. Deployed forces continue to assist in the distribution of relief supplies, transportation of essential goods, and the provision of other humanitarian services to residents affected by the earthquake.

Commodore Battung likewise paid a courtesy call on the Municipal Mayor of Sarangani, Honorable Mayor Adelan B. De Arce, to discuss the current situation on the island, assess the immediate needs of affected residents, and reaffirm the Philippine Navy's commitment to supporting the local government's disaster response and recovery efforts. The engagement further strengthened coordination between military and civilian authorities in ensuring the efficient delivery of assistance to communities impacted by the earthquake.

Following his engagements, Commodore Battung departed Balut Island aboard two (2) Multi-Purpose Attack Craft (MPAC) bound for Davao City and extended transportation assistance to eighteen (18) stranded residents. The passengers safely disembarked at Capt. Feranil Pier, Naval Station Felix Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City, underscoring the Philippine Navy’s continued commitment to supporting both humanitarian operations and the immediate welfare of affected civilians.

As recovery efforts continue, JTF Sinaya and Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao remain steadfast in working alongside local authorities and partner agencies to deliver timely assistance, sustain ongoing relief operations, and help earthquake-affected communities rebuild and recover.
