City Mayor Sebastian Duterte led city officials in welcoming the Chinese delegates in a courtesy call on Monday where both leaders discussed the continued friendship and collaboration between China and the city.
“Davao City has always considered China a valuable partner and continue to do so today,” Duterte said.
Davao City is home to a vibrant Filipino-Chinese community which greatly contributed to the consistent growth and development of the city’s local economy.
The city has also forged several Sister City agreements with Chinese cities which opened significant opportunities for collaboration, economic development, and innovation.
Duterte, in a message delivered during the courtesy visit, emphasized how embedded Chinese culture is in the city’s socio-economic tapestry. This is evident in the abundance of Chinese organizations in the city, schools, establishments, temples, the bustling Chinatown, and the creation of the Chinatown Development Council.
“All these are proof of how instrumental our Filipino-Chinese community has been and continues to be in the growth and development of Davao City,” Duterte said.
“Beyond the rich heritage in the city, our diplomatic relations have continued to grow because it was anchored on friendship and mutual respect with the visits of previous Chinese Ambassadors, the opening of the Consulate General in Davao, the forging of more Sister City agreements, donations of buses, motorcycles, and firetrucks,” he added.
Davao City was also a recipient to various projects and initiatives from China that is not only limited to donations of equipment that further improved the mobilization of the city’s emergency, safety and security response. China has given significant assistance to the city during the pandemic which has greatly helped a lot of Dabawenyos.
“We’re also grateful for your generosity in funding vital infrastructure projects including water supply systems, handwashing stations, school buildings, and the Bucana Bridge,” Duterte said.
Ambassador Quan, during the visit, emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual respect between neighboring countries like the Philippines and China, highlighting the strong potential for economic trade and cooperation, as well as peace building initiatives that would benefit both countries.
