Davao City awaits health experts’ recommendation on lifting of face mask use
Outgoing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said it is only the public health experts who can decide whether to lift or not the mandatory wearing of face masks following the low COVID-19 cases in the past the two months in the city.

Sara, during her Monday (May 16) radio program said the city will have to wait for any memorandum coming from the Department of Health (DOH) regarding the matter.

"We will have to wait for that. The public health experts are the ones who can say when we can take off our masks,” she said.

“I'd like to caution (our people) that we won't lift our mandatory mask wearing if it will just have to be revived again after one or two months or after a few weeks since people might become angry. It's better to continue with it if they are unsure,” Duterte said.

The mandatory wearing of face mask is the first minimum public health standard (MPHS) that had been implemented since the pandemic in early 2020.

Sara believed that wearing of face masks would be a good prevention from COVID-19 transmission.

To recall, the 18th City Council had approved City Ordinance No. 0307-20 mandating Dabawenyos to wear face masks in all public places.

Under the ordinance, any person caught not wearing a face mask in public places shall be penalized with a fine of P500 for the first offense; P2,000 for a second offense; and P5,000 or one-month imprisonment for the third offense.

A case will be filed in court for face masks violators who fail to pay the corresponding  fines.

Duterte on March 7,2022, had signed  Executive Order (EO) No. 11 Series of 2022, known as "An Order Lifting All COVID-19 Restrictions in Davao City," including the use of DQR for contact tracing and the one-meter social distancing, however, the wearing of face masks retains.
