“Our Project Engineer and Safety officer supervising the activity when the incident happened had been suspended and have been permanently pulled out from the project,” WCDC said in a statement.
The company however has yet to identify the two WITCO officers.
Saddened by the incident, the company also vows to take full responsibility once the company is found negligent of what had happened.
“Should there be any finding of negligence on the part of our supervising and safety officers on-site, our company will take full responsibility. WCDC is deeply saddened by the tragic incident,” the statement reads.
A worker of WCDC died while three others cheated death after experiencing difficulty in breathing while conducting internal pipeline cleaning activities in Barangay Buhangin, Proper for the DCBWSP on said fateful day.
The company said it has reached out to the affected workers and the family of the deceased and has started to provide them with the needed medical and financial support.
To recall, emergency personnel of the Davao City 911 rescue team immediately responded to the incident and pulled out the workers from the pipeline. Three of them were rushed to the hospital and luckily survived. However, a worker who was retrieved a little later inside the pipeline was pronounced dead upon arrival by physicians at the Southern Philippines Medical Center due to suffocation.
WCDC said an investigation was immediately conducted to understand how the tragedy had happened; to determine those who are responsible; and to provide immediate solutions to prevent a similar incident.
The company assured that safety lapses identified during the investigation are now being addressed.
As part of the post-incident action, the company has also embarked on a “comprehensive reorientation” activity.
“WCDC has started to undertake a comprehensive reorientation among our project leads and workers to ensure strict compliance with Occupational Safety and Health standards, retraining of all our manpower, and reinforcing full compliance to the work permit system, among others,” the statement reads.
Following the April 27 mishap, all works related to the DCBWSP have been temporarily suspended until such time the company is able to fully implement corrective measures, WCDC said.
“WCDC is committed to doing all that is necessary to ensure that this incident will never happen again. Our sincere apologies to all those who have been affected by this regretful incident.”
