The City Information Office (CIO) in its report said since the start of the program in October 2020, the city held nine distributions of laptops and tablets donated by various donors and this benefitted thousands of students already.
On May 2, 500 pieces of tablets donated by Cosmic Technologies Incorporated or Cherry Mobile Philippines were distributed to the beneficiaries.
Norman Baloro, Special Projects Program Manager of the city and Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor Commissioner said the distribution of gadgets to students is not the end of their engagement with the students and parents.
“We inspire them through monitoring. They are more motivated because every month we call them and ask how is the tablet, how is the laptop and we also ask about their grades,” Baloro said.
He said the project earned positive feedback from parents who did not expect they are being reached out even after the distribution of the gadgets.
“The appreciation we received from the parents and beneficiaries is already an inspiration for us to look for ways to help more who are left out,” he said.
Meanwhile, a total of 2,000 student beneficiaries will also receive backpacks and school supplies from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China.
The program is part of the city government's support for face-to-face classes.
Initially,150 students were given backpacks and school supplies on May 5 in a hand-over ceremony led by Acting Mayor Sebastian Duterte and People’s Republic of China Consulate General Li Lin.
The remaining 1,850 backpacks are set to be distributed after the election.
