DAVAO CITY- A 31-year old male scavenger was confirmed dead, two others hurt while two senior citizens remain missing following a mountain-pile of garbage at the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Carmen, Tugbok District here was collapsed at around 1:15 a.m on May 20, 2026.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) identified the fatality as Cristel and a resident of Purok 8, Barangay New Carmen and those injured as a 16- year old male and an adult female also residing at the same community were injured.

The Search and rescue operations continued until Thursday afternoon for the missing 78 and 67 year old females.

DCPO’s initial assessment revealed the mass wasting incident was triggered by the water buildup underneath due to heavy rains.

A total of 123 families consisting of 374 individuals residing near the landfill have been evacuated and temporarily sheltered in the Barangay Gymnasium following a forced evacuation by the local government.

The city government, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office, immediately extended  immediate assistance to affected residents.
