Michael Canete is a first-time PBA champion since he was part of the Beermen team that beat TNT in the recent PBA Philippine Cup finals.
Although not given enough playing time in the finals, Canete played superbly for the Beermen in the entire Philippine Cup season.
In the 111-92 win over the Beermen in the elimination round, Canete scored 10 points in an off-the-bench role.
San Miguel head coach Leo Austria gave Canete some quality minutes in the game, and the former St. John College of Davao player under coach Howard Delgado responded big-time by scoring double-digits.
In what was considered his breakout game in the PBA, Canete also scored on a slam dunk in a fast break layout to the delight of the crowd inside the arena. (Romeo Braceros, Jr.)
