DAVAO CITY---The veteran-laden Davao City Eagles chess team is one of the hottest teams in the ongoing 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) tournament.

The Eagles have won 17 of its last 20 games and are poised to end the elimination round of the PCAP tournament Southern division in second place.

The team is currently sporting a 26-7 record and assured of a quarterfinal slot already.

The team's last game in the elimination round will be held on March 23.

The team dubbed Davao Chess Wizards joined the PCAP Premier Cup tournament last year as a guest team where they were able to reach the quarterfinals round.

This year, the team is focused and prepared to win the PCAP crown with a formidable line-up made up mostly of veteran chess players who carried the flag of the city in local, national, and international chess tournaments.

Leading the team is World chess champion for the differently-abled Sander Severino, veteran chess coach Roel Abelgas, former national chess youth champion National Master (NM) Jonathan Tan, DPWH engineer Aglipay Oberio, Panabo City, Davao del Norte NM Henry Lopez, Philippine chess team coach for the differently-abled James Infiesto, Allan Diez, Alexander Lupian, Arnel Iton, Anthony Mosqueda, Cris Yap, Atty. Jong Guevarra, Nap Recosoca, Mary Segara, and former DLSU college chess varsity member Joy Acedo.

With a veteran and strong roster, the Eagles are predicted to once again barge the PCAP playoffs this year and go for the crown if luck permits. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
