Chess clubs oath-taking spices up Ozamis charter day chessfest
Davao City—Ten chess clubs from the provinces of Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental are set to have the oathtaking of their officers and members with the nation's pride, Asia's first grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre, on July 8 in the Aya Hotel and Residences, Clarin, Misamis Occidental.

Aside from Torre, the one-of-a-kind oathtaking ceremony will also be graced by Misamis Occidental Province governor lawyer Henry S. Oaminal, Sr., Ozamis City Mayor Henry Oaminal, Jr., and congressman Sancho Fernando Oaminal.

After the oath-taking, a national chess tournament will follow.

The following day, Torre will conduct simultaneous games against some lucky chess players participating in the tournament.

The Director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Board, Engr. Rey C. Urbiztondo organized the highly anticipated tournament to celebrate the 75th founding anniversary of Ozamis City.
Misamis Occidental Province's governor, lawyer Henry S. Oaminal, Sr., bankrolled the tournament.

According to Urbiztondo, an Honorary National Master, the tournament will also be a 2-day (July 8 and 9, 2023) chess competition called the Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Competition.

The open category winner will walk away with most of the P30,000 prize. The winners of the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places would get P20,000, P15,000, P10,000, P5,000, and P2,000. The remaining top 10 finishers would each receive P1,000.

The top Misamis Occidental, high school, and elementary category winners will each get P2,000, P3,000, and P3,000, respectively. For the top senior (60 and above), top unrated, and top lady, there are special rewards of P1,000 apiece.
