The Mindanao power grid was placed under Yellow Alert on Saturday, September 12, due to insufficient operating reserves amid the unavailability of several generating plants.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the Yellow Alert is in effect from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The grid has an available capacity of 2,623 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,456 MW.
NGCP said 13 generating plants are on forced outage this September, including seven plants that have been unavailable since August, four since July, one since June, two since January, one since 2025, and one since 2024.
Another seven plants are operating at derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to 740.7 MW.
NGCP identified the unavailability of Mindanao’s large coal-fired power plants, GNPK 2 and 3, as among the factors contributing to the Yellow Alert.
The grid operator explained that a Yellow Alert is declared when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
