Sulu Sultan voyage to China needs to be taught in schools- Princess Kiram
DAVAO CITY (PIA)- The 1417 voyage of the Sulu Sultan to Ming China needs to be put in history books and taught in schools says Princess Jacel Kiram, a descendant of the Sultan of Sulu and a current official of a Non-Government Organization.

“We can spread this knowledge that when we were discovered, we were never savages, we were never illiterate, we were a great nation already,” Princess Kiram said.

“Nakakalungkot na hindi siya tinuturo sa mga schools, wala itong documentation sa lahat ng libro but there is a book written about the 600-year-old relationship (between Sulu and China) na sinulat sa China,” the Princess said.

Princess Kiram attended the historic commemoration of the 605th year anniversary of the visit. The event was held at the Consulate General of the Peoples Republic of China in Davao City on Sunday (Sept. 11).

In 1417 the Sulu Sultan Paduka Pahala along with an entourage of 300 people went on a sea voyage towards China to visit the Yongle Emperor. The group were warmly received by the Emperor, however during the return trip, Sultan Paduka Pahala developed a sickness and died at Dezhou located in the present Shandong Province in China where he was buried and where the Emperor built a tomb which exists to this day.

She said the book in China is being translated into English and hopefully the translated book and be reprinted into English or Filipino-language copies

“So that the Philippines would know this history of Sulu kasi lalo na na coming from Sulu when we think of Sulu takot na agad tayo ang makikita lang natin ang pangit na nangyayari but the beauty of Sulu in terms physical beauty and the rich culture and tradition hindi alam,” Princess Kiram said.

The commemoration was organized by the Consulate General led by Consul General Li Lin and the International Center for Peace, Reconciliation and Development (ICPRD) founded by Princess Kiram.

Among those who attended the 605th year commemoration was Special Assistant to the President Anton Lagdameo, Sultan of Sulu Phugdalon Kiram and Davao City Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre. Also in attendance were Deputy Mayors representing the 11 ethnolinguistic groups in Davao City, and several Davao City hall officials. (PIA/RG Alama)
