ACT Davao Region: Additional teaching items welcome, but longstanding problems remain

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Davao Region welcomes the creation of additional teaching positions for School Year 2026–2027.

However, while new items may help ease shortages in some schools, they do not address the deeper problems confronting teachers and public education.

“Dugay na namo ning gipangayo. Apan hangtod karon, ang mga nag-unang problema sa atong mga eskwelahan nagpabilin. Bisan unsaon pag-ilis sa curriculum o school calendar, dili kini makasulbad sa kakulang sa pondo, classrooms, learning materials, ug suporta nga gikinahanglan sa mga magtutudlo ug estudyante, ” according to  Reynaldo S. Pardillo, ACT Davao City District President. 

In Davao Region, many qualified teachers continue to experience delays in promotion and reclassification despite years of service and compliance with requirements. At the same time, schools operate with limited resources, leaving teachers to shoulder expenses that should be funded by the government.

Pardillo emphasized that addressing the education crisis requires more than adding teaching items. The government must also ensure adequate funding for schools, sufficient classrooms and facilities, enough support personnel, timely promotion and reclassification of teachers, and decent salaries that recognize the vital role of teachers in society.

“Ang kalidad nga edukasyon dili makab-ot pinaagi lamang sa pagdugang og mga posisyon. Kinahanglan og seryosong pagpamuhunan sa pampublikong edukasyon ug tinuod nga suporta sa mga magtutudlo nga matag adlaw nag-atubang sa kakulang sa sistema aron masiguro ang pagkat-on sa mga estudyante,” Pardillo said.
