PNP Chief to cops: Be responsible gun holders
DAVAO CITY- Members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) were told to exercise due diligence in handling their issued firearms following the incident involving a patrolman who allegedly shot and killed his wife and their three -year- old kid in Virac, Catanduanes on Saturday (Jan 15).

Reports from Catanduanes Police Provincial Police stated that Patrolman Jaymar Malasa, 25-years old came from a drinking session when he went home and argued with his wife.

The heated discussion turned bloody when the suspect pulled his service firearm and shot his wife. The bullet pierced through the wife’s body hitting the child with the same bullet. The police officer then shot himself which resulted in his instantaneous death.

Malasa is a member of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company in Catanduanes.

In a statement, PNP chief Dionardo Carlos said the incident will serve as a lesson for police officers to take precautions and never put the law into their hands.

“You underwent Gun safety training. Use all the learning to effectively and responsibly discharge your duty,” Carlos said emphasizing that every PNP personnel is accountable for his/her action.

He said their service firearms are used whenever necessary in its prime task as law enforcers. Even during this election period, despite being given the gun ban exemption.

Carlos added that PNP’s mandate for prudent gun use still remains.
