The national team last won a gold medal in the Asian Games in 1962. They beat China to secure their fourth consecutive crown in the tournament.

This Gilas team had many exciting moments. They made a big comeback win against China in the semi-finals, winning by just one point. They also narrowly escaped a loss to Iran in the quarterfinals, winning by only one point.

This was the first time in a long while that the Philippines made it to the gold medal match. They hadn't reached this level since they won the silver medal in 1990. It was also the first time in a while that they made it to the semifinals. Their last appearance in the semifinals was in 2002 when they finished in fourth place. This happened in Busan, South Korea.
