Top Davao chessers begin quest for crown in 'Asenso Pinoy' chess tourney
DAVAO CITY---Some of the top players in Region 11 will start their quest for the crown in the money-rich online chess tournament "Asenso Pinoy Open Blitz Chess Championship" on April 16 (Saturday) and 17 (Sunday) via the chess.com platform.

Veteran Davaoeno chess masters, National Masters Jonathan Tan, and Henry Lopez are part of the tournament, which offers P20,000 in cash prizes to the winners.

The youngest NM in Davao region  Christian Gian Karlo Arca, 13 from Panabo City, Davao del Norte is also part of the tournament sponsored by Asenso Pinoy partylist number 74 in the ballot.

Chess organizer Arena Grandmaster Rey Urbiztondo said he decided to plan the tournament to earn some money during this pandemic.

"The chess community would always welcome events like this nga makatabang sa mga chess players nga maka-income pina-agi sa mga pa-premyo kay lisod ang panahon karon," Urbiztondo said.

"Pabor gyod ang online chess malikay  kita sa peligro nga virus  kay ang intetesado maka-participate man bisan anaa ra sa ilang tagsa-tagsa ka panimalay," Urbiztondo added.

Based on tournament rules, with no registration, the elimination games will be held on the first day to select the top-20 performers to play in the championship round on the second day, and the seeded titled players.

Aside from Davao region chess players, FM Vince Alaan and Cyrus Donasco from Surigao are also on the list, alongside NM Levi Mercado and 13-year-old Woman National Master Ruelle Canino from Cagayan de Oro City and NM Zulfikar Sali from Zamboanga City.

"Asenso Pinoy acknowledges more support for sports development, and it chooses chess as one of the best and old sports disciplines," he said.

The tournament proper will be handled by NM Henry Roger Lopez, who National Arbiter Ely Acas will assist in running the show.

The champion will go home  P8,000-richer with the second and third placers to receive P4,000 and P2,000 each.
