Panaboan chessers rule chess tourney in Misamis Oriental
DAVAO CITY—Two of the most promising young chess players in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, won two categories in the Mayor Apsu Cup Invitational Rapid Chess Tournament Balingoan, Misamis Oriental on May 26-27.

Arena Grand Master Carl Zirex Sato, a chess varsity of Perpetual Help University Altas in the NCAA, won the open division of the tournament participated by some of the top chessers in Mindanao.

Sato, 22, scored six points to pocket the top prize in the chessfest.

In the kiddies under 14 division, National Master Christian Gian Karlo Tade-Arca won the top prize after scoring 5.5 points.

Arca, 13, won P3,000 cash and a trophy as prizes.

On May 21-22, Arca also carried Panabo City to a second-place finish in the 2022 Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship Zamboanga City.

Arca (Grade 7 student of Panabo City National High School), who plays for board one, led Panabo to the runner-up honor in the team chess tournament in which some of the top chess teams in the Philippines participated.

In chess tournaments, one who plays onboard 1 is considered the leader and strongest in the team.

The team, which was also composed of Chin Lim and ad Jayson Salubre won a P30,000 cash prize. 

Arca also won a separate P1,000 for winning the most promising player award. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
