Panaboan chesser ends 11th ASEAN Para Games stint with 4 medals
DAVAO CITY---Veteran chesser National Master Henry Lopez from Panabo City, Davao del Norte, won four medals for the Philippines in the 11th ASEAN Para Games in Semarang, Indonesia.

Lopez won two golds, one silver, and one bronze in Southeast Asia's biggest sporting event for persons with disabilities.

Lopez won the two gold medals in team events alongside FIDE Master Sander Severino and  Jasper Rom.

The two other medals were won as individual player in the tournament.

After the dust settled, the Philippine chess team landed in third place behind champion Indonesia in the chess event.

The Filipino chessers finished the tournament with 26 medals, consisting of 10 golds, 11 silvers, and five bronzes.

Indonesia emerged as the champion in the chess event with 40 medals, followed by Vietnam with 30 medals.

On the last day of the competition on August 5, the Philippines won four gold medals with a sweep of the men’s B2-B3 and women’s PI individual and team blitz events, respectively.

Darry Bernardo took the individual gold while anchoring the squad that included Menandro Redor and Arman Subaste in the men’s B2-B3 category.

At the same time, Cheyzer Mendoza teamed up with Cheryl Angot and Jean-Lee Nacita in the women’s PI class. 

In the 11-nation sportsfest, FIDE Master Zander Severino emerged as the country’s most bemedaled athlete with four gold and two silver medals in the stint supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
