Eugene Torre set to grace 1st Masonic District Chess Tournament in Tangub City
Davao City—Eugene Torre, the first grandmaster from Asia, is set to grace the 1st Masonic District Chess Tournament on April 25, 2023, at Function Hall 1, Tangub City, Misamis Occidental.

Arena Grandmaster Rey Urbiztondo, the organizer of the tournament and incumbent DDGM of Masonic District RX Misamis Occidental, said Torre would do some simultaneous games and lectures in the event.

Urbiztondo said the tournament is unique since, aside from the regular competition, it will also serve as a dry run for regional players at the Northern Mindanao Regional Meet in the second week of May.

Urbiztondo told Newsfort that the tournament is sponsored by Misamis Occidental Governor  VW Henry Sevilla Oaminal is a Past District Deputy Grand Master and Hiram Awardee, a Mason supporter.

He said Oaminal, a three-term congressman and former deputy speaker of the house, sponsored the event since he wanted to promote chess in the province.

"Our district chose chess. This will be the start of the many chess programs in the province. The next plan is the simul and lecture of GM Eugene Torre here in Misamis Occidental," Urbiztondo said.

The three-division tournament will feature a 12-under category, a 17-under category, and an open category, which offer P3,000 each for the champion. 2nd to 5th placers will receive P2,000, P1,000, P750, and P500, while 6th to 10th placers will bring home P200 each.

P500 each awaits the top junior and top lady. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
