Sara to DepEd officials and coaches: If it's too hot outside, call off games
DAVAO CITY— Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Duterte urged Department of Education officials and coaches to halt games if the temperature becomes unbearable for the athletes and spectators in the ongoing Davao Regional Athletic Association 2024 competition.

Athletes' health comes first at the largest athletic event in Region 11, according to Duterte, who was the guest of honor at the 2024 DAVRAA opening at the UP Mindanao Sports Complex in Bago Oshiro.

The vice president stated that it is preferable to schedule the games for early morning or late afternoon, when it is already too hot outside, in order to safeguard the athletes' health. She issued the directive given the current extreme heat in Mindanao.

During her address, Duterte also encouraged the athletes to take inspiration from renowned sports figures like Elma Muros Posadas, a track star, and boxer Manny Pacquiao, who is from Mindanao.

She said despite starting from nothing, Pacquiao and Posadas persevered and worked hard to become the best.

Duterte also said she is certain the athletes have what it takes to succeed if they put their hearts into it and consistently work harder in their training. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
