Aquino told this reporter that playing in the tournament again is a good start for the youth program of Gilas.
"Hopefully, joining the youth program of FIBA is a good start for the women's program," Aquino said.
The coach behind the multiple women's basketball championship trophies of National University in the UAAP made the statement on the second and final day of the Gilas U-18 tryouts for the Girls Davao City leg, which was held at Arcadia gym in Ecoland, Davao City.
The tryouts were supported by Samahang Basketbol Pilipinas regional director Glenn Escandor and SBP 11 operations head Ronel Leuterio.
He said more than 20 players from the Ateneo de Davao University, Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School, Malayan Colleges Mindanao, Rizal Memorial Colleges, and Monkayo National High School joined the tryout.
The veteran bench tactician said after the Davao City tryouts he hopes to pick some players to build a pool of talented girls players in the country who can be tapped for future international competitions.
"Not all will be chosen, but this is a grassroots program wherein we select players for future competition," Aquino added.
Moreover, Aquino said the skills they hope to see are shooting, hustle and defense.
"Hopefully, one of these kids has these skills," he said.
Aquino said aside from Davao City, they also hope to conduct tryouts in Cagayan de Oro City, Bacolod, and the northside of the country. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
