PANELO QUESTIONS SENATE’S SILENCE OVER WITHDRAWAL OF TWO IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES VS. VP SARA
Salvador Paolo A. Panelo Jr., spokesperson for Vice President Sara Duterte, questioned the Senate majority’s silence following the prosecution’s withdrawal of two of the four articles of impeachment against the Vice President.

In a statement titled “Where Is the Outrage?”, Panelo claimed that the withdrawal wasted taxpayers’ money, estimating that around ₱500 million was spent on 20 trial days devoted to the articles involving the alleged misuse of confidential funds and grave threats.

He further estimated that the total public cost could exceed ₱1 billion when other expenses, including the House of Representatives’ proceedings, are considered.

Panelo also argued that the withdrawal deprived Duterte of the opportunity to confront the allegations, present countervailing evidence, and obtain vindication through a ruling by the Senate impeachment court.

He questioned whether political considerations ahead of the 2028 elections influenced the proceedings, raising concerns about the possibility of an earlier conviction and its potential impact on senators seeking reelection.

“Who is going to hold them accountable?” Panelo asked, criticizing what he described as the Senate majority’s lack of outrage over the alleged waste of public funds.

The cost figures and allegations of political motives cited in the statement have not been independently verified.
