The solemn ceremony honored the victims of the deadly attack that shook the city more than two decades ago and reaffirmed Davao’s commitment to peace, security, and community vigilance.
Mayor Sebastian Duterte was unable to attend the event as he is currently in The Hague visiting his father, former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
In a message read during the program, Mayor Duterte called on Dabawenyos and the city’s security sector to remain vigilant and united in safeguarding the community.
“Let the theme for the 89th Araw ng Dabaw — ‘Dabawenyo Ko: Nilambo. Nagkahiusa’ — serve as a reminder for all of us to work together, to do our part, to remain vigilant and mindful, and to practice our culture of security,” the mayor said in his message.
He also urged residents to continue serving as the “eyes and ears” of the community to help ensure the safety of everyone in the city.
The mayor further emphasized the importance of remembering the victims of the 2003 tragedy and honoring their memory through a continued commitment to maintaining peace and order.
“Together, let us remember the lives that were lost here 23 years ago and honor their memory by remaining united in purpose and firm in our commitment to maintain peace and order in the city,” the message read.
During the commemoration, city officials, security forces, and families of the victims gathered in solemn remembrance of one of the darkest chapters in Davao’s history.
Vice Mayor Duterte, representing the city leadership, joined attendees in paying tribute to the lives lost and in reaffirming the city government’s dedication to ensuring that such acts of terrorism will never happen again in Davao City.
The annual event forms part of the city’s continuing efforts to honor the victims while strengthening public awareness on vigilance, unity, and the preservation of peace in the community.
