The body approved on third and final reading the ordinance entitled “Mt. Apo Geopark of 2024.”
Section 4 of the ordinance states that Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)- Davao will be the primary agency to manage the MT. Apo Geopark in coordination with the city government and other concerned agencies.
The council cited the declaration of Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) as geological moñument is due to its biodiversity hotspot, rich geological history, cultural significance scenic beauty , and geological education.
Second District Councilor Diosdado Angelo Junior Mahipus, vice-chairman of the Environment Committee of the city council said that the proposal emanated from DENR Regional Office as they want to include MANP in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage list and UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGP).
Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS) Program Coordinator Lemuel Manalo manifested that the recognition will promote the education and conservation efforts of MANP in the jurisdiction of Davao City.
He said the funds that will be granted will be used to enhance the educational information, communication materials and programs.
Environment Committee chair Councilor Temujin Ocampo of the city’s first district said that the declaration aims to heighten the protection and development of MANP as the country’s geological landmark.
He said this would also resort to strengthening the protection of MANP against environmental abuses.
Ocampo also said the measure is to pave the way for MANP to be included in UNESCO world heritage list and UGGP.
