Nordeco electrical linemen brave rivers, strong winds to restore power in remote areas
The electrical linemen also called “warriors of light “of Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Inc, (Nordeco) risked their lives on Tuesday (May 10) to restore power in a remote sitio and nearby areas in the municipality of Pantukan, Davao de Oro province.

The group crossed a total of 36 rivers amid bad weather in order to reach sitio Campo Uno-Lantawan a remote area of barangay Napnapan in Pantukan to remove an Ipilipil tree that fell on a power line due to a landslide causing hours of power interruption on several households.

NORDECO in a statement has quoted lineman Joseph Viernes who said they were able to leave the area past midnight that day and had banana for dinner.

Electricity in the area was lost around 10 in the morning and was restored past 10 in the evening.

“Tungod sa kalisod sa dalan ug pipila ka sapa angkinahanglan nga tabokon, milungtad og pipila ka oras ang pagkawala sa sugangdagitab sa hilit nga bahin sa Napnapan, Pantukan, Davao de Oro (due to difficult roads and a number of rivers to cross, the blackout lasted for several hours),”Viernes said.

Nordeco said this is the life of their linemen where they have to hike several hours and cross rivers to troubleshoot the power issues like restoring power damaged by typhoons and falling trees or repairing damaged electric poles of member-customer-owners (MCOs).

Trees falling on power lines or tree limbs coming into contact with power lines are frequent causes of power outages and"blinking lights" even in good weather but most especially when there are strong winds, Nordeco said.

Only electric cooperatives like Nordeco are authorized to implement the national government’s rural electrification program.
