Nearly 200 anglers join Davao shore casting tournament
DAVAO CITY — Close to 200 anglers gathered along the coast of Davao City on March 15 for the Shore Casting Fishing Tournament 2026, an event organized by the Davao Venturing Anglers with strong backing from Rep. Paolo Duterte.

The fishing tournament formed part of the activities marking the 89th Araw ng Davao and the birthday celebration of former president Rodrigo Duterte, drawing fishing enthusiasts and hobbyists from across the city.

According to Butch Bautista, president of the Davao Venturing Anglers, Rep. Duterte has long been a supporter of their group and its advocacy.

“Even before, Cong. Pulong has already been very supportive of our group. This organization is not just about fishing as a hobby. We promote responsible shore casting and fishing, and we also highlight how abundant our seas here in Davao are,” Bautista said.

Participants cast their lines along the Toril shoreline in a friendly competition that showcased both skill and camaraderie among anglers while promoting environmental awareness and responsible fishing practices.

Organizers said activities like the tournament help encourage appreciation of marine resources and strengthen the local fishing community.

The event also coincided with the upcoming birthday celebration of former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte, whose family remains influential in the local leadership of Davao, including Vice President Sara Duterte, Mayor Sebastian Duterte, Vice Mayor Rigo Duterte II, and 2nd District Rep. Omar Duterte.

Organizers said the turnout of nearly 200 participants reflects the growing popularity of shore casting and the continued support of local leaders for community-based recreational activities.
