According to an official report from the City Economic Enterprise Office’s Market Management Division, the incident occurred at approximately 4:25 p.m. when a corroded pipe supporting the canopy gave way.
This triggered a domino effect, exacerbated by a water connection installed above the roof, resulting in a partial collapse of the canopy. The event further sparked an electrical short as wires were stretched during the incident.
A total of 12 vendors were directly affected, with their stalls sustaining damage and their fish products compromised.
The collapse also led to injuries for two individuals, identified as 20-year-old Hyrn Almoroto and 22-year-old Jessel Landong. Both women were struck by the falling canopy but were quickly reported as out of danger.
The affected vendors were listed as follows:
• Arnolito L. Eco (Stall 22)
• Nor Aiza A. Item (Stall 23)
• Angelito A. Apostol (Stall 24)
• Abdul Karim M. Alfonso (Stall 25)
• Alita A. Andan (Stall 26)
• Rowela Pilo (Stall 28)
• Lucia D. Macasampon (Stall 29)
• Norie M. Hussin (Stall 30)
• Bebenia I. Awang (Stall 31)
• Gracela D. Jala (Stall 32)
• Judith Maybano (Stalls 33 & 34)
Following the collapse, the market’s maintenance team promptly initiated clearing operations to ensure safety and restore order in the affected area.
Julius L. Colasito, Senior Administrative Assistant V and Officer-in-Charge of the Market Management Division, confirmed that immediate steps are being taken to secure the area and prevent further incidents.
As of press time, investigations are underway to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether repairs to the infrastructure can be expedited to minimize disruptions for both vendors and consumers.
