The incident was reported at 6:40 p. m on December 14, 2024, when Mr. Wilfredo Geberola sought the assistance of the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Pujada, reporting that his son, Mr. Bruce Torreta Geberola, a resident of Sitio Taganilao, Barangay Tamisan, Mati City, had been missing since 10:00 AM of the same day while engaged in fishing activities.
In response, personnel from Coast Guard Station Davao Oriental and CGSS Pujada immediately mobilized a search and rescue team. Departing from Pujada Island at 6:44 p. m onboard a rigid boat (RB) and a loaned motorized banca, the team commenced search operations within Pujada Bay.
By 9:50 p. m, the missing individual was successfully located in the vicinity waters off Oak Island, Barangay Lawigan, Mati City. According to the victim, his fishing boat, locally referred to as a “pakura,” had capsized due to sudden squalls and large waves encountered while fishing earlier that day.
Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) extends its commendation to the personnel involved for their swift and professional response, which led to the timely rescue of the victim.
CGDSEM reiterates its commitment to maritime safety and urges fisherfolk to exercise caution and monitor weather conditions before venturing into the sea.
