Bong Go extends aid to fire victims in Pagadian City as he underscores importance of raising fire prevention awareness in communities
Senator Christopher “Bong” Go renewed his call to local government units to intensify and promote fire safety and preparedness in their respective communities as he had his team assist fire victims in Pagadian City on Saturday, December 10.

“Nakakalungkot man po na masunugan dahil para po kayong bumalik sa simula pero mas importante po ang buhay ng bawat isa. Ang gamit po ay nabibili, pero ang pera na kikitain natin ay hindi po nabibili ang buhay. A lost life is a lost life forever,” expressed Go in his video message.

“Kaya hinihikayat ko rin po ang inyong lokal na pamahalaan na mas lalo pang palakasin ang fire prevention awareness. Karamihan po sa ating mga kababayan ang kulang pa po ang kaalaman sa fire safety kaya mas mabuti po na ibahagi natin ito sa kanila para maiwasan ang mga ganitong pangyayari,” he noted.

For his part, Go has principally authored and co-sponsored Republic Act No. 11589, also known as the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act.

RA 11589 was signed by former president Rodrigo Duterte last year and it mandates the bureau to undergo a ten-year modernization program that includes procuring new fire equipment, expanding manpower, and conducting specialized trainings for firefighters, among others.

In partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the respective local government units, the BFP is likewise tasked to conduct monthly fire prevention campaigns and information drives, particularly in fire-prone areas.

Go’s team mounted the relief operation at the Mayor’s Function Hall where they gave away snacks, grocery packs, vitamins, masks, and shirts to 17 fire-hit households. In addition, the team also provided umbrellas, shoes, cellular phones, and balls for basketball and volleyball to select individuals.

To help the affected families sustain their daily needs while recovering, the Department of Social Welfare and Development also provided them with financial aid.

Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, then encouraged those eligible to take part in the national inoculation drive. He likewise encouraged those with health issues to visit Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center in the city or Margosatubig Regional Hospital where there are Malasakit Centers ready to assist with their medical-related expenses.

There are currently 153 Malasakit Centers nationwide that have assisted millions of poor and indigent Filipinos. The program was initiated by Go to ensure that more underprivileged Filipinos have convenient access to medical assistance programs by the government, including the DSWD, Department of Health, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.

“Kung kailangan niyo po ng tulong sa pagpapaopera sa Maynila, huwag po kayong mahiyang lumapit sa ating mga lokal na opisyal o kaya sa aking opisina. Magsabi lang ho kayo at kami po ay handang tumulong sa abot nang aming makakaya,” Go offered.

The senator likewise supported the establishment of 307 Super Health Centers across the country under the 2022 national budget, including one each in Mahayag, Margosatubig and Pagadian City. DOH plans to construct at least 320 more SHCs in 2023.

Super Health Centers are medium versions of polyclinics and are bigger than rural health units, which offer basic services such as out-patient, birthing, isolation, diagnostic (laboratory: x-ray, ultrasound), pharmacy, and ambulatory surgical unit, among others.

Other available services are eye, ear, nose, and throat (EENT) service, oncology centers, physical therapy and rehabilitation center and telemedicine, where remote diagnosis and treatment of patients will be done.

Meanwhile, to help spur infrastructure development in the town, Go, as Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, supported the improvement of the municipal water system, concretion of a farm-to-market road in Barangay Sebukang, and the acquisition and installation of solar-powered street lights along Lodion National Highway to Balucot National Highway.

“Palagi po kayong magdasal at magtiwala lang po kayo sa gobyerno. Palagi po tayong magtulungan at magmalasakit mga kababayan ko at sigurado po ako na malalagpasan natin ang kahit na anumang hamon,” concluded Go.

Last November 18, Go, joined by Senator Robinhood Padilla, visited Zamboanga City and Josefina, Zamboanga del Sur and personally provided relief to indigents and typhoon victims, respectively. (PR)
