271 Davaoeños get DOST scholarship
DAVAO CITY – A total of 271 individuals from the different cities and provinces in Davao region qualified as scholars under the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI). They are included in the 10,487 qualifiers across the country for academic year 2022-2023.

DOST-11 in a statement said that of the 271 total qualifiers from Davao region, 112 qualified under the Republic Act 7687 Scholarship Program, a scholarship for students with high aptitude for Science from economically disadvantaged families.

The other 162 qualified under the Merit Scholarship Program, which formerly known as the NSDB or NSTA Scholarship under RA No. 2067, is awarded to students with high aptitude in Science and Mathematics who are willing to pursue careers in the fields of Science & Technology (S&T).

Qualifiers can enjoy the full benefits of the scholarship for the whole duration of their programs of study. The benefits include a monthly stipend of ₱7,000, tuition fee subsidy of up to ₱40,000 per academic year for those in private institutions, learning materials and connectivity allowance, one-time MS/PE clothing allowance, one economy-class round trip fare per academic year for those who will study outside their home province, group health and accident insurance, and thesis and graduation allowance.

The DOST S&T scholarship program aims to entice Filipino youths to pursue careers in S&T and help steer the country toward national progress. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DOST-SEI halted the scholarship qualifying examination in 2020 and 2021, but the new set of scholars was finally announced last June 12.

Outgoing DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña expressed optimism that the new scholars will significantly add to the country's S&T experts.

The DOST S&T scholars are encouraged to render service in the country in their fields of specialization after graduation for a period equivalent to the number of years they enjoyed the scholarship as return service.
