Gabriel Ryan Paradero from Pasig Triumphs as Champion in the 1st PSHS-WVC CheckMatte Chess Tournament in Iloilo
Fresh from a championship success in the 20th Season of the Christian Schools Athletic League (CSAL), Gab Paradero of Pasig City secures another victory at the 1st PSHS-WVC CheckMatte Chess Tournament in Iloilo, showcasing remarkable talent and dedication in the sport of chess.

14-year-old Arena International Master Gabriel Ryan Paradero went on a six-game winning streak with a draw in the final round to become the champion of the recently concluded 1st Philippine Science High School - Western Visayas Campus' CheckMatte: Chess Tournament - U16 last April 13, 2024 held at Robinsons Pavia, Iloilo. 

This chess tournament in which 200 players participated was organized by the Philippine Science High School - Western Visayas Campus and managed by Mr. Hubert Canto which has three Divisions. These are the Open Division, U16 Division and U11 division.

"I am really happy and I dedicate this win to our Lord. Thank you to our God and he gave it. Many thanks to my parents who is always with me in all the tournaments. Thank you to my coach, Gerry Paul Nudalo, who tirelessly supported and helping me to be good at playing chess. Thank you PSHS-WVC, thank you sir Hubert Canto and to all the arbiters and officials of this successful event". Gab Paradero is a member of the Pasig City Grassroots Chess led by Coach Franco Camillo with the full support of the Pasig City LGU led by Mayor Vico Sotto and Nana Espina-Alonso of the Pasig City Sports Development Program.

Von Leuther Canaya won first place in the U11 division followed by National Master Shan Lester Jamerlan in second place and Mica Claire Clar in third. In the Open division, National Master Fritz Bryan Porras reigned and was crowned champion followed by Mark Jossel Mariano in second place and National Master Cyril Felrod Telesforo in third place. Vaughn Robert Oberio placed 2nd and Karl Marx Castillano settled for 3rd place in the U16 division.
