Speaking after the SM Lanang Grand Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, the young lawmaker said it was difficult to celebrate knowing that many families in Cebu and nearby provinces are again enduring floods, displacement, and loss.
“I grieve for our brothers and sisters in Central Visayas. It’s hard to find joy in times like these, especially with another storm now hitting the country,” Omar said.
Rep. Duterte likened the bond between Davao City and the Visayas to that of siblings — connected by shared experiences of hardship and recovery. He said Davaoeños deeply empathize with Cebuanos who have seen their lives upended and communities submerged twice in a short time.
“We are with you and ready to extend assistance,” he said. “Let’s work together to ensure this kind of tragedy doesn’t happen again.”
He emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive flood-prevention and disaster-mitigation measures in Central Visayas, noting that repeated flooding destroys homes and disrupts livelihoods and local economies vital to national growth.
With Typhoon Uwan continuing to bring heavy rains across several regions, Rep. Duterte urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, follow evacuation advisories, and prioritize safety over property.
“Please trust the emergency evacuation orders. We can rebuild homes and replace belongings — but not lives,” he reminded.
He also appealed for collective compassion and national solidarity amid the crisis.
“As we begin the Christmas season, may we open our hearts to those who have lost everything,” he said. “Now is the time to show true Filipino spirit — bayanihan, malasakit, and readiness to help.”
Despite the festive atmosphere of the SM Lanang event, which marked the start of the mall’s holiday celebrations led by SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, Omar said the joy was bittersweet.
“It’s heartwarming to see people gather and celebrate,” he said.
“But our thoughts and prayers are with those struggling in Cebu and across the Visayas. Padayon ta — together, we will rise again.” =#
