POC says SEAG gold and silver medalists are potential shoo-ins in Asian Games
POC says SEAG gold and silver medalists are potential shoo-ins in Asian Games
DAVAO CITY---According to Rep. Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), the best Filipino athletes who competed well and took home gold and silver medals at the recently finished Southeast Asian Games will be given serious consideration for the nation's delegation to the Hangzhou 19th Asian Games.

Medal winners whose events will be competed in this year's Asiad will be placed into one of two classifications, which will determine how much money each athlete receives.

“That’s a parameter; gold and silver medalists in Cambodia will be strongly considered for the national team to Hangzhou. They’ll be funded under the Group A classification. The rest will be in Group B, but they need to be evaluated,” said Tolentino on Friday, May 19.

For athletes whose participation will be paid for by Philippine Sports Commission, the POC has designated Group A and Group B for athletes whose participation will be paid for by their national sports associations.

The Philippines finished sixth overall in the medal standings at the Phnom Penh Games, with 58 gold medals, 85 silver medals, and 117 bronze medals for a total of 260 medals.

This was the nation's best foreign showing in over four decades, since the 1987 edition in Indonesia when it won 59 gold medals.

Tolentino claims that in addition to SEAG performance, additional criteria will also be based on Asian and global rankings because the results of the Asiad fall within the Olympic qualifying period for the Paris 2024 Games.

Hidilyn Diaz, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, EJ Obiena, the third-best pole vaulter in the world, and Caloy Yulo, the reigning global gymnastics champion, are anticipated to lead the Philippine team.

Olympic boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, along with gymnasts John Ivan Cruz and Miguel Besana, weightlifters Vanessa Sarno and Elreen Ando, tracksters Janry Ubas and Eric Cray, taekwondo jin Kurt Barbosa, and swimmer Xiandi Chua, among others, led the nation's gold haul in the biennial meet and also have the chance to get slots as well.

The Philippines won four gold, two silver, and fifteen bronze medals in the most recent Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
