At the powerlifting competition held in Johor Bahru this year, the Philippine men's and women's teams collectively won 44 gold, 17 silver, and 17 bronze medals against the best powerlifters from the participating Southeast Asian nations.
In addition to winning 49 medals in the men's open, junior, and master I divisions, the men's team also broke three Asian junior records at the competition.
The women's powerlifting squad, led by World Games qualifier Joyce Gail Reboton, won 29 medals.
The Filipino lifters also established seven brand-new Asian Records in the Women's Open and Junior Categories.
The International Powerlifting Federation, Asian Powerlifting Federation, and Malaysian Association for Powerlifting arranged the SEA Cup this year from September 15 to September 18, 2022.
The Philippine national powerlifting team had previously triumphed at the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, taking home four gold, two silver, and five bronze medals.
Meanwhile, teen female Filipino lifters under the direction of Vanessa Sarno have won 15 gold medals at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
