PH boxing team pulls out of Asian boxing championships due to pandemic concerns

DAVAO CITY---The Philippine boxing team has decided to pull out of the Asian Under-22 Men's and Women's Boxing Championships on January 20-30 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan due to pandemic concerns.

ABAP Secretary-General Marcus Manalo said they decided to withdraw from the tournament due to the high risk of COVID-19 infection due to the rising COVID cases all over the world.

It was learned that aside from the Philippines, Thailand, India at Kazakhstan have also decided not to anymore join the tournament.

The members of the boxing team who are supposed to join the tournament are Mark Lester Durenz, Ernie Garcia, Junmilardo Ogayre, Jere Samuel Dela Cruz, John Paul Panuayan, Marjon Pianar, Mary IC Sinadjan, and Maricel Dela Torre.

The team started training for the tournament in November via a bubble set-up in Baguio City.

Aside from the said tournament, the boxing team also hopes to join the 31st Hanoi Southeast Asian Games in May and the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games in September. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
