Mindanao teens win big in National Age Group Chess Championships
Davao City—Two teenagers from Mindanao won big in the Vice Governor Athena Tolentino National Age Group Chess Championships in Tagaytay City on Sunday, March 5.

Zamboanga City native National Master John Cyrus Borce won the 16-and-Under Category of the tournament, which features some of the top young chess players in the country.

Borce, an Ateneo de Zamboanga University student, scored six points to rule his category.

In the 14 and under category, Keith Adriane Ilar, a resident of El Salvador City, and Misamis Oriental emerged as champions.

Ilar also scored six points to win his division.

Aside from the two, National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Panabo City won the premier open under-18 division.

Arca, a 14-year-old prodigy considered the next big thing in Philippine chess, scored six points to rule the division and get the bragging rights as the best 18 and under chess player in the Philippines today. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
