This developed after the Kings beat the hard-fighting Visayas qualifier Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias Titans from Victorias City Negros Oriental 91-94 in game one of their best-of-three Vis-Min championships at the Davao City Recreation Center, more popularly known as Almendras Gym, the afternoon of May 2.
The win allows the Kings to take a 1-0 lead in their series and could nail down the championship if they beat the Titans again on May 3 at 2:30 p.m. at the same venue.
Knowing the importance of the game and the chance to face college teams in Manila as prizes, the two teams fought hard in the first half and had the score tied at 18.
In the second quarter, the Kings, led by their head coach Dodong Cagampang, implemented a trapping defense to take a slim lead in the half at 41-38.
In the third quarter, versatile forward Ian Gaslang and point guard Rico Quimpo went hot from the outside and carried their team to a 69-59 lead entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Kings forward Chris Catarong and center Wayne Gementiza went hot inside and carried their team to victory against the Titans.
High-flying forwards Rommel Hechanova, Aldave Canoy, and Axle Pasaol played well for the Titans in a losing cause.
The tournament is sponsored by the Royal Mandaya Hotel and Genesis 88 Construction. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
