Davao Karatekas, Arnis players hopeful for better showing in Batang Pinoy 2022
DAVAO CITY---As part of their nationwide grassroots sports development and talent identification programs, karatekas from the Association of the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) Davao and arnis players from the Kapatirang Doble Olisi under the PEKAF (Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation) Region XI have fielded entries in the 2022 Batang Pinoy Games in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

Karatedo and Arnis competitions were held online for the 2022 Batang Pinoy Games, along with other combat sports (martial arts) like wushu and taekwondo, according to  Kapatirang Doble Olisi and PEKAF XI and Kapatirang Doble Olisi Head Master Mario Palazuelo and  AAK Davao Branch Chief and Head Coach Rommel C. Tan during the weekly DSA (Davao Sportswriters Association) Forum at the SM City Davao Annex on December 8.

Palazuelo, who was joined by outstanding female coach Adelfa Sagne, as well as athletes Alexander James Catarinen, Dolland Feb Apas, Julia Cassandra Sarate, and Jollah Cabresa Baruiz, claimed that they would only have seven entries for the annual youth games rather than the permitted 10, as some of their members had not met the PSC's deadline for compliance.

Karatedo features virtual Kata (forms) and Kumite (sparring) tournaments, while Arnis will feature its traditional and non-traditional Anyo (forms).

Tan and Palazuelo are both confident in the abilities of their players to do well at the yearly meet, despite the fact that the virtual or online format will be somewhat challenging for the athletes due to its particular rules.

'Having the events in face-to-face format would be much better, and the officiating would be much faster, but during the pandemic lockdown, most of our players have also learned to adapt to the online format since we have them almost every month, Tan said. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
