Davao Chess Wizards to face Laguna in PCAP-San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land Premier Cup quarterfinals

DAVAO CITY---In view of its six-game winning streak, the Davao Chess Wizards has made it to the quarterfinal round of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines-San Miguel Corporation-Ayala Land Premier Cup.

The Wizards is set to face the dangerous PCAP defending champion Laguna Heroes in the quarterfinals on November 17.

On November 13, the Wizards showed grit and skills after they beat Northern Conference conference leader San Juan Predator 2-1 via Armageddon.

Both squads drew blitz (3.5-3.5) and rapid 7-7) chess to set up the extra period. Once there, Davao’s NM Aglipay Oberio and Lyndon Sombilon defeated San Juan’s IM Ricky de Guzman and FM Arden Reyes.

The Predators’ IM Rolando Nolte and WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda had a good day at the office on all the boards they competed. GM Oliver Barbosa did not play against Davao.

After beating San Juan, the Wizard also beat the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates 11-10.

In their match against the Checkmates, the wizards displayed their trademark by bouncing back in the rapid games, 8-6, after a 3-4 loss in the blitz portion, to win in the overall score, 11-10.

NM Alexander Lupian led the scorers against Surigao with 3 points and got enough contribution from Anthony Mosqueda (2.5 points), NM Aglipay Eight Oberio (2 points), Mary Israel Segarra (1.5 points), Arnel Aton (1 point), AGM Lyndon Sombilon (.5 point) and Denzel John Amar (.5 point).
