Panaboan NM carries PH Para chess team to bronze medal finish in 4th World Championship for People with Disabilities
DAVAO CITY---A veteran National Master from Panabo City, Davao del Norte scored a crucial point to help the Philippine paralympic chess team win the bronze medal or third-place finish in the tough 4th World Championship for People with Disabilities on November 13.

NM Henry Lopez won his last game in the ninth round to help the Philippines get 25.5 points and win third place in the chessfest.

With his brilliant performance in the entire tournament, Lopez also becomes the highest-scoring Filipino with seven points.

Aside from Lopez also part of the team are FM Severino from Silay City, Negros Occidental, Masters Jasper Rom from Danao City, Cebu, and Darry Bernardo from Angeles City, Pampanga.

Close to 200 chessers from over 40 countries participated in the 10-day event which saw Rom, Bernardo and Lopez seeded 13th, 26th, and 27th, respectively. 

Lopez is on a winning streak as of late as he also won the 2021 Davao del Norte Rapid Chess Tournament last October 22-23.

He scored seven points to win the championship in the chessfest participated in by some of the top chess players in Davao del Norte.

Lopez won a cash prize in the tournament.

On September 28-30, Lopez also finished second place in the tough 1st IA/NM Wilfredo Neri Memorial Cup.

Lopez won a P2,000 cash prize in the tournament which features some of the top chess players in the Philippines. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
