Nesthy Petecio targets medal in IBA world boxing tourney
DAVAO CITY---On Sunday, March 19, Nesthy Petecio knocked out her opponent to hold the final Filipino spot in the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India.

Guy Tianna of Trinidad and Tobago, the sixth-seeded fighter in the 54–57 kg featherweight division, was defeated by the 30-year-old Davaoeo by a score of 6-0 as she displayed the strength that earned her the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The judges from Morocco, Estonia, Serbia, and Indonesia gave Petecio scores of 30-27, while the Venezuelan judge gave him a score of 30-26, giving him a commanding lead.

Petecio's title campaign got off to a strong start with the victory, and it also set up her next match with Venezuela's Omailyn Alcala, who defeated Chandra Kala Thapa of Nepal by a score of 5-0.

Petecio and Alcala both received byes in the first round.

Petecio won after Aira Villegas, competing in the 48–50 kg light flyweight division, was defeated 5-0 by Bulgarian Zlatislava Chukanova in the first round.

Chukanova won with a score of 29–28 from Argentina and India and a 30-27 score from judges from Cuba, Algeria, and Serbia.

After losing her debut contest in the 60–63 kg light welterweight division on Friday, March 17, Riza Pasuit became the first victim of the small Philippine contingent.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
