DC Jail Warden's chess for a cause raises P100k as educational aid to  prisoners' children
Davao City: In addition to offering prizes and a venue for aspiring chess players in region 11, the recent 1ST JSUPT ERICLEY LOUISE D. LAZARO WARDEN'S OPEN RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT, held February 3–4, at the Abreeza Malls Ayala in Bajada, this city also gave some financial assistance to 10 children of inmates inside the Davao City jail male dormitory in Barangay Maa.

Jail warden J/Supt. Ericley Louise Lazaro of the city jail's male dormitory disclosed that P10,000 would be given, spaced out over  time, to ten children of people who are incarcerated.

Well-known athlete Lazaro of Tuguegarao, Cagayan, stated that P100,000 had been set aside for the pupils as study aid.

He said that ever since taking on the role of jail warden in Davao City, he has continuously planned and encouraged sports activities for inmates and their families.

He continued by saying that chess is a simple game to manage and that there are a lot of chess players in Mindanao, so he decided to start with that.

The previous recipient of the top warden award expressed satisfaction with the results of his chess tournament, citing Senator Bong Go's support as well as the fact that it benefits convicts' children and chess players alike.

In addition to the children of inmates, Fide Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca received P10,000 from the Bureau of Jail Management in Region 11 for his next international competitions.

Arca, a Panabo City, Davao del Norte native, is regarded as one of the top 17 under-23 sportsmen in the Philippines and is the best young chess player in Mindanao.

In order to demonstrate his abilities, Arca also played a simultaneous chess match with a number of young players throughout the competition.
