DAVAO CITY---A promising boxer from General Santos City has ended the world boxing champion drought of the Philippines after he won the International Boxing Organization flyweight title by beating three-division world champion Gideon Buthelezi of South Africa with a first-round knockout at the International Convention Centre in East London, South Africa on July 29.
Dave Apolonario took the boxing world title three months after her mother died.
Apolinario is the current sole world boxing champion of the Philippines.
The win is impressive for the 23-year-old Apolinario, who beat a boxer 13 years older than him and a former three-time world boxing champion.
Known as "Doberman" due to his attacking nature, Apolinario is very happy with his win over his South African rival.
Before turning professional at 18, Apolinario was a top amateur as a junior, winning gold medals at the Philippine National Games and Palarong Pambansa tournaments.
The win also improved Apolinario’s rankings with the other world boxing organizations.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
