Sen. Risa Hontiveros said in a statement, the bill has been passed by both houses of Congress, which will make a solo parent shall avail of P1,000 financial assistance for months if she or he is an indigent.
Also, if the child or children of up to 22 years old of the solo parent shall be entitled to free education.
She said the solo parent shall also be entitled to a 10 percent discount on drugs if she or he earns less than P250,000 a year.
Hontiveros said if a solo parent who has a child or children below six years old, he or she shall have the preferential option to the trainings and scholarship of the Technical Education Skills Development Authority.
The bill considers anyone a solo parent if he or she qualifies in the following criteria: the wife of a low or semi-skilled overseas Filipino worker who has been abroad for at least 12 months; a legal guardian or foster parent who has been recognized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Hontiveros said even the relative of a solo parent, whether she is the grandmother or grandfather, who has been raising and taking care of her child or children could be considered a solo parent.
She said the solo parenting bill would be complemented by the other laws such as the Universal Health Care law and the Hospital Deposit law, which prohibits hospitals from requiring a money deposit before the patient would be admitted for treatment.
