Davaeona chesser gets Woman National Master title in chess

DAVAO CITY—The hard work and perseverance of Davaoena Chess Arena Grand Master Rowelyn-Joy Acedo in the sport of chess have finally been rewarded.

Recently, Acedo was given the Woman National Master title by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Getting an NM title is difficult; you must earn points and win prestigious tournaments.

Last March 6, Acedo got third place in the  Mindanao Ladies Chess Open 2022.

Cedo won P700 in cash as a prize.

On February 14, 2022, Acedo won the winner-take-all P25,000 online chess tournament.

Acedo beat Kim “The Gambling Mathematician” Zafra, a veteran chesser and businessman based in Europe, 7.5 to 1.5 to win the Valentine's Day chessfest.

Acedo, a former college varsity chess player at Dela Salle University in the UAAP, used her skills to defeat Zafra in their match.

Acedo got the chance to face Zafra in the finals after she scored 13 points in 16 matches to win the tournament elimination round, which was attended by 16 of the top women chess players in the Philippines. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
