7 rescued from submerged motorbanca in Davao City

Seven individuals including the boat captain were rescued from a submerged motorbanca in the vicinity waters off Kilometer 10, Barangay Sasa, Davao City, on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 2026.

The Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) reported that while the motorbanca was en route to the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), the crew of MV Maewess 4, together with the embarked Coast Guard Sea Marshal personnel, spotted the distressed motorbanca and its occupants struggling in the water.

Acting swiftly, they immediately conducted a rescue operation and safely recovered all seven individuals before transporting them to Maewess Port, where they were provided with first aid and initial medical assistance.

Personnel of Coast Guard Station IGACOS coordinated with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and other concerned agencies to ensure the rescued individuals received the necessary medical attention. Two of the rescued individuals, who sustained minor injuries, were transported to the Davao del Norte–IGACOS Zone Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Initial investigation revealed that the motorbanca submerged after encountering strong winds and rough water currents while conducting a sea trial. Meanwhile, the submerged motorbanca was secured in the waters off Barangay Caliclic, IGACOS, and will undergo further assessment before being turned over to its rightful owner.

The successful rescue highlights the commitment of CGDSEM and its maritime partners to ensuring the safety of life at sea through prompt response and effective coordination.

The Coast Guard reminds all boat operators to closely monitor weather conditions, ensure vessels are seaworthy, and prioritize safety before venturing out to sea.
