AboitizPower, Davao Light inaugurate Davao–Samal submarine cable interconnection

Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), through Davao Light and Power Company, has inaugurated the submarine cable interconnection linking the Island Garden City of Samal to the Davao City mainland grid, marking a major step toward improving power reliability on the island.

The project involves the installation of a 1.250-kilometer, 69-kilovolt submarine cable with a rated capacity of 50 megawatts across the Pakiputan Strait. The route was selected along a defined section of the strait through careful planning.

With an estimated peak load of 12 megawatts in Samal, the new interconnection can support more than four times the island’s present demand. This provides ample capacity for growth and improves overall system reliability.

AboitizPower Distribution Utilities Chief Operating Officer, Anton Perdices in his speech said the project is a significant milestone not only for Aboitiz Power Corporation and Davao Light but more importantly, for the people and future of the Island Garden City of Samal.

“We gather here following the inauguration of the submarine cable connection across the Pakiputan Strait. This achievement now firmly links Samal to the mainland power grid of Davao City and marks a long-awaited turning point, addressing years of power challenges and moving the island toward greater stability, reliability, and growth,” Perdices said.

He thanked the local government unit of the Island Garden City of Samal, the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte, and the community for their strong support and for warmly welcoming Davao Light as we begin to serve the island.

“We also thank the Samal Island Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Samal Island Beach Resort Association for their continued support and partnership,” he said.

Meanwhile, Engineer Enriczar Tia, Davao Light’s President and Chief Operating Officer assures that Davao Light remains committed to delivering dependable service, strengthening our network, and supporting the continued growth of Samal.

Tia said the  interconnection is a critical step in strengthening the power system of Samal, adding they are committed to delivering reliable service, improving our network, and supporting the island’s continued growth.
